A great awakening. thanks gowtham
Sri Rama Rama Ramethi Rame Rame Manorame
Sahasra Nama tathulyam Rama Nama Varanane!

Dear Divine Souls!
Almost everyone in one’s own way, at different times in a day, has been doing some chanting or the other of a divine name i.e. Nama Japa. But a collective chanting of any selected divine nama (i.e. Bhajan), for a particular time duration, will not only yield material and spiritual benefits to the individual but also to the society in general.
In the present times, Ramanama Japa is the easiest Japa and one can easily make others also to do this Japa. Our predecessor devotees / bhaktas in the past have practised and well proved the power and salutary benefits of Rama nama japa, to self as well as the society at large. One can start Ramanama Japa even without necessary initiation by a Guru and it does not expect any rigorous conditions.
A japa expects only DEVOTION and COMMITMENT. It is believed that one mode of divine nama Bhajana (Japa) daily by a congregation for some duration would give many fold benefits not only to the individuals participating in the bhajan but also to the society, because of immense positive vibrations generated by chanting of a divine nama. Everyone knows that any sound generates vibrations which travel in the air and those vibrations affect one’s feelings, thoughts and sometimes action also.
Rama nama is a divine nama and when japas or bhajans of this divine Rama nama take place they will generate divine vibrations which cause good effects to individuals and to the society at large. But nowadays to arrange for daily congregations for bhajans is not so convenient for devotees to gather at a particular place and time, apart from other problems associated with organising such bhajans on a continuous daily basis.

His Holiness Sri Sri Swamiji discusses briefly about the significance of Rama Nama as cited in the different scriptures. The information given here on this glorious Nama is just the tip of the iceberg.

In Sri Swamiji's words, 'Even if the whole sky were used as a paper and all the waters of the Universe were used as ink, it would just not suffice to pen down the glories of Rama Nama!'

Rama Nama
The Name of the Name!

Every other mantra in our scriptures have their own names. Rama Nama is the only Mantra that is called ‘Taraka Mantra’. The word ‘taraka’ means the one that helps us cross. It helps us cross the ocean of ‘samsara’. It helps us cross the cycles of birth and death. If it is chanted as 'Rama', then it is a Nama.

If it is chanted 'Ram', then it is a Mantra.

Our ancient Sages and Rishis have glorified the Rama Nama.

Rama Nama gets exactly the same importance in Saguna Upasana (worshipping the Absolute Truth as a Being with a form) as does the Pranava ('Om') Mantra in Nirguna Upasana (worshipping the Absolute Truth as formless).

Rishi Manu shows that the Rama Nama has links to all the other mantras that ever exist.

In Syavana Smriti (Syavana is the name of a rishi), Syavana says that the Rama Nama is the essence of all the Vedas, Shastras, Itihasas and Puranas.

Sage Vasishta meditated on the Rama Nama for quite a long time. Hence he wanted to name the Almighty with the same Mantra that he had chanted.

The Yoga Connection

In the philosophy of the Yoga, 'Ra' is considered the 'Mooladhara' (the point of origin of the power of Kundalini) and 'Ma' is the 'Sahasrara' (the destination). Hence, when the Rama Nama is chanted in the right tone and manner, the serpent power rises and hits the head or the 'kapala' Thus, by merely chanting the Rama Nama, one can become a Yogi.

Shiva's family Mantra

We are all aware of the story of the competition between Ganesha and Muruga on who will get the divine fruit. Muruga, angry that the fruit was not given to him, went to Palani. In order to appease his anger, the competition was conducted again, when Muruga diligently circumambulated his parents on his peacock at great speed. Ganesha, on his part, wrote 'RAMA' on the sand and circumambulated it, as that is equivalent of going around the whole world! Pleased, Siva honoured him by crowning him the leader of all his minions - the 'bhoota ganas' and thus he acquired the name 'Ganapathy' and 'Gana Nayaka'

In Vishnu Sahasranamam, Lord Siva asks Parvati to chant the Rama Nama all the time. A good teacher is the one who practices what he preaches. It is obvious that Siva, being the Supreme Guru, (Jagadguru) Himself chants the Rama Nama. When parents do something noble, would not the son follow the same? Muruga and Ganesha chant the Rama Nama always. That is verily their ‘Kula Mantra’.

The Lords' favourite!

The ‘sthala purana’ of Kasi says that the deity Kasi Viswanatha initiates the Rama Nama to each and every being at the time of their death, in their right ear.

The Lord Dhakshinamurthy observes silence because He doesn’t want to waste any time without chanting the Rama Nama.

The Sun God ever chants the Rama Nama as he is proud that Sri Rama came in his dynasty.

ama Nama in today's world

Sri Bodendra Saraswati Swamigal, Kabir, Samartha Ramadas, Thiyagaraja, Bhadrachala Ramadas, Papa Ramdas, Bhagavan Yogiramsuratkumar and innumerable saints in the recent past have advocated the Rama Nama and also showed how the Rama Nama can perform miracles.

Sri Ramakrishna initiated Swami Vivekananda into the holy 'Rama' Nama. It is the power of that Divine Name that made him establish this Universal Religion of Brotherhood called Hinduism all over the world.

Mahatma Gandhi, in his final lecture before independence said, 'We have tried our level best. Now let us all chant the Divine Name together. Only that has the power to get us independence.' Not one of his prayers passed without Rama Nama Kirtan.

By the mention of nama mantra, the one nama that comes to mind is of Rama. Rama is one of the most effective nama mantras. The simplicity and profundity of Rama tatva can be seen in the name Rama. Rama is taraka parabrahman, and His name is taraka nama. Ananda and moksha can be got by chanting the word Rama.

The significance of nama is explained through different stories, such as this: during setu bandhana the stones having Rama nama etched on them were floating on the sea because of the greatness of the name. When Sri Rama Himself put a stone in the ocean, it did not float! Thus the name has more mystic power than the incarnation Rama! There are similar stories that explain how the mystic Vidya of Rama Taraka Para Brahman goes beyond the personal aspect and concept of Rama the historic hero. (However it should be understood that we may not find such stories in the original Ramayana. We find these stories amply told in various guru-sishya paramparas, not to exaggerate but to explain the significance of mantra and how the impersonal aspect goes beyond personal).

In the verse from Mahabharata that is often quoted to extol the greatness of Rama nama, chanting the nama is said to be equal to chanting the Vishnu Sahasra nama (sahasra nama tattulyam raama naama varaanane).

The Rama Raksha stotra of Budha Kaushika praises the greatness of Rama nama thus:

Bharjanam bhava beejaanaam, aarjanam sukha sampadaam

Tarjanam yama dutaanaam, raama raameti garjanam

The cause of happening/becoming are destroyed (meaning one will get over the cycle of births), happiness and possessions are achieved, and death is destroyed – with the roar of the word Rama.

Some of the nama mantras for Rama are

Sri Rama

Sri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama

Aum Sri Raamaaya Namah

Aum Sri Sita Raamacandrabhyam Namah

Symbolic Meaning of Rama

The play of the Divine
Oh Mind! Ever remember
The nectar-like name of Rama
Which is sweeter than Sugar,
Pleasanter to the tongue than honey.

Ramayana is not merely the story of Rama. It is an epic which proclaims the greatness of three cities--Mithila, Ayodhya and Lanka. The Rama Principle has brought out and demonstrated the significance of these three cities.

Rama is the embodiment of Dharma (righteousness),
Lakshmana is the embodiment of Sraddha (dedication).
Bharata embodies Bhakti (devotion),
Shatrughna personifies Sakti (valour).

Dharma is associated with Sraddha. The protecting cover for Bhakti is Sakti. Hence Rama and Lakshmana were always together as a pair, and Bharata and Satrughna as another.

Hardly had Rama reached the age of sixteen when sage Viswamitra arrived on the scene. With his coming, the epic career of Rama (Rama-ayana) began. From then on the destruction of the Raakshasas started. Beginning with the protection of Viswamitra's yajna (religious sacrifice), it is one continuous saga of ceaseless action' liberating Ahalya from her curse, proceeding to Mithila, breaking Siva's bow, marrying Sita (the incarnation of Maha Maya), humbling of Parasurama on the way to Ayodhya, leaving for the forest as an exile, searching for Sita, invading Lanka, destroying Ravana, installing Vibhishana on the throne, and triumphantly returning to Ayodhya. During all this period, Rama's career was filled with action and adventures with no respite.

The term "Rama" means one who is pleasing and lovable. "Ayana" means movement or journey. "Ra" refers to Atma and "Ma" refers to Mind. The Rama Principle means merging the mind in the Atma. "Ramayana" means suffusing the world with the bliss of the Rama Principle.

May I realize the Sat-Chit-Anand Brahm swaroop (form) of my 'Aradhya Ishta' (favoured God)

May there be established an Age of ‘Sat’ (Truth) over the entire earth.

May there be a reign of spirituality in all the three worlds (the earth, the universe and the paradise)!!!

Here is a quote from Gandhiji’s Hairjan magazine -
“To a question by some missionary friend whether he followed any spiritual practices?

In reply to this question Gandhiji said that he was a stranger to yogi practices. The practice that I follow is something I learned in my childhood from my nurse. I was afraid of ghosts. The nurse consoled me that ghosts don’t exist. She also gave me a panacea for my fear of ghosts. She advised me to chant the Divine Names of Lord Rama. What I learnt in my childhood has now become eternal in my mind. It is verily the sun that has brightened the dark star. A Christian might find solace from the repetitive chanting of the name of Lord Jesus, a Muslim can find peace by reciting the name of Allah. All these are identical and have same implications and produce the same results under the same circumstances. The repetition should not be just a lip movement but be a part of the being itself. Gandhiji even proclaimed that it is only the Divine Name chanting of Lord Rama that would help India gets its independence in one of his last meetings, before India got her independence. Soon after this meeting, India got its independence akin to Yogi Ramsuratkumar who said that the Divine Name chanting of Lord Rama would establish Rama Rajya.
