Kara Kolukattai is prepared along with Sweet Kolukattai on Vinayaka Chathurthi. Recipe Summary

Yield: 4 servings
Ingredients
Par Boiled Rice - 3 cups
Green Chillies - 4-5
Coconut grated - 1/2 cup
Onion - 2
Coriander leaves - few Curry leaves - few Oil - 2 table spoons
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Blackgram dhal - 1 teaspoon
Bengal gram dhal - 1 tablespoon
Salt - to taste

Preparation Method
1. Soak the rice for 2 hours and grind it into a coarse batter
2. Chop the onions, chillies, curry leaves and coriander leaves
3. Heat the pan with oil. Saute with the mustard seeds, Blackgram dhal, Bengal gram dhal. When it starts spluttering, add the onions, chillies and curry leaves
4. Fry for few minutes and add the grated coconut. Mix well and kolukattai batter and salt
5. Mix until the batter becomes a dough. (thicker)
6. Then add the coriander leaves and mix well. Now make them into small portions and steam it in a idli pot / cooker for 10-15 minutes
The green chillies can be ground along with the rice to serve children. South Indians prepare this Kolukattai as a snack in the evening
